Storybirds   Leave a comment

I am so proud of the writing that the students have been doing in their storybirds.  Here are a few examples of the students’ work.  I will try to post a few each week, going forward.

(I will not be able to post every storybird, but I will try always choose work that is either exemplary or shows growth for a particular child.  If you want a link to one of your child’s storybirds, and don’t know how to access it, feel free to contact me.)

Show and Tell
There will be no show and tell this week due to the Holiday Break and Holiday Show.  We will resume show and tell in January, with word family words!

Website of the Week
Each week I spotlight a website that you can use at home to help your children with what we are working on in class. All websites can be found on our class sqworl.

I am keeping www.storybird.com as the website of the week, as we will be using it as part of our Holiday Work Packet.  We go to the computer lab as a class once a week to work on our storybirds, but please encourage students to work on these online stories at home too.  Once students finish a story, please have them publish it.  I will be sharing some stories on the blog this evening, so check our blog https://rakiclass.wordpress.com for these announcements and those stories.  Remember, the childrens’ user names are their name with 1b at the end and their passwords are: rakiclass.

Video of the Week
Each week I spotlight a YouTube video that you can use at home to help your children with what we are working on in class.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nJL9EA1GVM4
This week’s video is the song we will be singing in the holiday show.  Please allow your child to practice at home.  The holiday show is Thursday, December 16th – we hope you can attend.

Announcements & Reminders:
– Folders came home yesterday.  Please take a chance to review your childs’ work with them and talk about what they did well and what they can improve on.

– The holiday show is Thursday, December 15th at 2:00 p.m.  Please join us at this time, and please plan to stay until the end of the show.  (We’re the last act!)

– On Thursday, I will send home a Holiday Work Packet to help your child maintain all the skills we have been working so hard on for the last 14 weeks.  Please help your child complete this packet.  There will be a small reward for all students who bring back the work completed.

– Please do not allow students to bring toys to school(with the exception of show and tell items).  Many students are bringing toys and they are becoming a distraction, as students do not wait until recess to bring them out of their bookbags.  Toys that are brought out of bookbags will be taken by the teacher, and must be picked up by the parent.  One exception to this rule is the soccer balls that are often sent in for use during recess.

– We have been working on learning our addition and subtraction facts.  Currently, we are testing on each level of facts, with no timer.  After the winter holiday, students will begin working on timed tests – with just one minute to answer 20 fact questions.  Please begin practicing these facts with your child to help them build automaticity.

– Please continue to read to your child for 20 minutes each night.  Most of my students are beginning to read a lot of words in English.  After you read to your child, allow your child to read to you.

– Please continue working with your children on tying their shoes. This is an important self help skill that also aids in fine motor skill development.

This is one of our class’ favorite videos. It reviews how to make a short vowel into a long vowel with a silent e.

Websites to Use at Home   Leave a comment

sqworlI have sent multiple emails with websites for your children to use at home.  I was going to send home a paper list too, but if your house is like mine, things get lost, so I’m trying a new, easy way to give you links.  Here is our class sqworl:  http://sqworl.com/9j5jmg.  On this site, students can click on a number of websites that would be educational and help them with skills we need for the classroom.  Some of these websites we have already used in class, others we will use later.  Please give your child the chance to use these websites at home!
